Property fire
Fire control were inundated with calls from members of the public looking from different locations reporting a large plume of smoke. Luckily the first call we received was from staff at a plant nursery where a polytunnel was on fire with an adjacent one at risk of catching fire too. Initially 2 fire appliances from Dawlish and one of our Exeter stations (Middlemoor) were mobilised but due to the amount of calls received and possibility of a lack of water supply locally a third fire appliance from Teignmouth was mobilised, together with a water carrier from Danes Castle (our 2nd Exeter fire station).
Update 1550hrs - This incident is still ongoing. The fire quickly spread to the adjacent polytunnel and crews worked well to contain it and prevent it from spreading any further. The polytunnels are being used for storage of furniture and gas cylinders so extra precaution is being taken for the cylinders involved due to the risk of them overheating and exploding. As a result a safety cordon will be introduced to keep firefighters, and any other people present, safe.
At this time crews have managed to extinguish the fire, using 4 breathing apparatus and 2 hose reel jets. All cylinders effected have been removed and will be cooled until a safe temperature is reached. Crews are also in the process of damping down hotspots and removing furniture. There were no casualties. Further information will follow when available but at this time this is all the information we have.
