Outdoor fire
Fire control have received several 999 calls reporting a fire within an electrical sub station in the centre of Exeter. Two fire engines were initially sent, but on arrival they asked for further assistance, so another 4 have been sent to assist (6 in total). There is also a command support unit from Honiton attending. Crews are currently trying to extinguish the fire and protecting surrounding properties with foam and thermal imaging cameras. Cordons in place.
Update 7:25 - Surrounding buildings being inspected for fire spread. Breathing apparatus, water and foam jets in use.
Update 8:10 - Electrics now isolated. Nearby properties have been evacuated and up to 400 homes currently believed to be without power. Police and ambulance also in attendance.
Update 8:25 - Incident being scaled back, crews remain in place to check for hotspots. Two hose reel jets in use.
Update 8:50 - Crews dealing with hotspots on adjacent property.
Update 9:10 - Around 25 people were evacuated from nearby properties and many will be able to return shortly.
Update 9:40 - Riverside Leisure Centre will be used as a respite centre for displaced residents and to provide information. Crews withdrawing from the incident with two remaining in place.
Update 10:05 - The external electrical sub station was destroyed by fire, four adjacent properties affected by fire and heat. National Grid in attendance working to restore power. Two crews remain on scene to expose and extinguish hotspots in the roof void of an adjacent property. Crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two foam jets, two hose reel jets and a thermal imaging camera.
