Fire Control received a call in the early hours of this morning reporting a fire in the downstairs of a property at the above location.

Control immediately mobilised one fire engine from Axminster station and two further fire engines from Chard station.

On arrival crews confirmed that one male had evacuated from the property and no other persons were involved. The male was suffering some effects of smoke and crews requested the attendance of an ambulance. Fire fighters were treating the patient with oxygen therapy.

Crews set to work with two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet. Crews also requested the attendance of a further fire engine to assist with the protection of surrounding properties.

03:38 - crews increased breathing apparatus wearers to four and were tackling the fire using two attack jets and one safety jet.

04:01 - crews requested the attendance of the incident support unit from Martock to provide more breathing apparatus cylinders.

The fire was contained to the room of origin however the rest of the property has received significant smoke damage. The cause of the fire was accidental.

Crews are remaining on scene for a short time awaiting arrival of a representative of the housing organisation to take over duty of care of the scene.
