Incident - Barn Fire

Date: 20/07/2019
Time: 14:42
Location: Burtle near Bridgwater
Area: Somerset
County: Somerset

The Fire Service received several calls reporting a hay barn on fire at the above location.  Two fire appliances from Glastonbury and Burnham-On-Sea as well as a water carrier from Bridgwater attended.

Due to the number of calls being received by Fire Control, a further fire appliance from Bridgwater was mobilised.  Repeat calls to Fire Control suggested that there was a large amount of diesel in the barn and the fire may have spread to the house so a fourth fire appliance from Street was mobilised.

Upon arrival fire crews confirmed one barn well alight and the fire had spread to the rear of the adjacent house.  Fire crews are tackling the fire using one hose reel jet, one compressed air foam systems jet and two breathing apparatus wearers.

Update at 15:07 hrs - a further two fire appliances from Bridgwater and Wells as well as the incident command vehicle from Wiveliscombe.

Update at 15:20 hrs - fire crews requested the attendance of Western Power to isolate the power to the property as well as Police to close the road.

Update at 17:02 hrs - the Environment Agency were informed of diesel that spilled into a nearby watercourse.  Fire crews are also using compressed air foam systems to extinguish the fire.

Update at 17:27 hrs - this is an agricultural barn measuring 18 metres by 11 metres severely damaged by fire.  The incident is being scaled down to 1 pump and a water carrier allowing approximately 100 hay bales to burn out under supervision.  Crews are at work with one covering jet to prevent fire spread and to cool heating oil tank.

Update at 23:00 hrs - a relief crew from Nether Stowey is on scene. All other appliances bar the water carrier have returned. Steady progress is being made by crews. Final details to follow.

Update at 0600 hrs - the fire is now being left to burn out. The barn was completely destroyed in the fire, and the cause was deemed accidental ignition. These are the final details.
