One fire appliance from Chulmleigh was initially mobilised to a property after a call from the occupant stating the chimney was on fire. Whilst the fire crew was on route there was a second call to fire control stating the fire had spread and so a further 2 fire crews and an officer were sent to the incident from Hatherleigh and Okehampton.

Shortly after the arrival of the first crew, there was a request for a 4th fire crew to be sent, which came from North Tawton, along with a water bowser which would come from Exeter.

The chimney fire involved a large open grate and the house was heavily smoke logged. Crews were at work with 4 breathing apparatus sets, a thermal imaging camera, 2 hose reel jets and a safety jet.

20:09 The fire was believed to now be contained to an oak beam and further investigations to the rest of the property were being carried out.

21:25 Crews are making steady progress checking for hotspots and cutting away the beam. 1 hose reel jet and small tools are in use.

22:24 There is currently 2 fire crews still at the property which will shortly be released and a further fire crew will be replacing them.

A fire crew from Crediton monitored the temperature of the beam and the roof space for a few hours before leaving the scene once they were happy the temperatures were safe.

The chimney fire involving the large open grate in a domestic property measuring approximately 10m by 8m involved an oak beam which was severely damaged by fire. The ground floor was 75% damaged by fire and 100% damaged by smoke. The first floor was 50% damaged by heat and smoke.
