Incident - Derelict building fire

Date: 14/09/2018
Time: 15:19
Location: Sherborne Road, Yeovil
Area: Somerset
County: Somerset

Two fire engines from Yeovil and Sherborne were mobilised to reports of smoke coming from a derelict building on Sherborne Road.

On arrival crews confirmed flames and smoke were issuing from the building and made pumps 3. A 3rd appliance was sent from Yeovil who had just become available from an RTC. Fire control also mobilised another fire engine from Sherborne in Dorset for BA support.

This is a 2 storey derelict building measuring approximately 20m x 10m. The fire is located on the 1st floor. Crews are at work using 4 breathing apparatus, 1 hose reel jet, 1 safety jet, and a BA emergency team stood by in case. Crews are using a ceiling hook to remove the ceiling internally to locate hotspots and any fire spread. Crews are also using a 105 ladder outside the building to remove tiles and check for any fire spread externally.

At 1600hrs crews have withdrawn from the building due to asbestos content involved. Breathing apparatus has been discontinued. Crews are continuing to damp down. The cause of the fire is deliberate.
