Casual Community Safety Technician


The Community Safety (CS) Prevention Team are inviting applications from enthusiastic, motivated, disciplined, energetic and trustworthy individuals who would like to work within the Home Safety Team in the Plymouth & Yeovil areas on a casual ad-hoc basis, and contribute to a wider Community Safety agenda. 

The primary focus for Casual Technicians will be to deliver Home Safety Visits (HSV) across our Service area on an ad-hoc basis depending on Service needs. A Home Safety Visit is a FREE service we offer people who live in Devon & Somerset. We visit people in their homes at a convenient time to see what we can do to make them safer.

Who are Home Safety visits for? 

  • Any household with children under the age of 18
  • Anyone aged over 65
  • Anyone with a disability, mobility issues or sensory loss
  • Anyone who smokes and lives alone
  • Anyone in a thatched property
  • Many other vulnerable people

During a visit: 

A visit usually takes around 45 minutes and covers: 

  • checking smoke alarms are set up correctly
  • making a fire escape plan
  • using electricity safely
  • cooking safely
  • keeping children safe from fire
  • identifying and discussing any further support, including fitting specialist fire safety equipment where required.

This is a challenging role not just in the sense of delivering our services to communities but managing the demands of a new role and new ways of working at present. Working as part of the Community Safety Team, in this role you may be asked to work at various locations throughout the Service area. The work allocation will predominantly be providing resilience to deliver Home Safety Visits when permanent (25 full time) Technicians are absent from work due to annual leave and other commitments. 

The level of this role reflects the responsibilities that come with it and individuals will be expected to make independent decisions, understand the implications of them and inform appropriate partners when necessary. 

Applicants should have good interpersonal skills, ability to work with vulnerable groups and have good links with their local communities as well as an enthusiasm to make their communities safer. 

There may also be opportunities to deliver other Community Safety Disciplines as required. Casual Technicians will be managed by the Community Safety Team. 

A Disclosure & Barring (DBS) Enhanced Check is required for this role.
