The On-call element of Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is fundamental to our emergency cover across Devon and Somerset.

On-call Firefighters come from a variety of backgrounds – they could be self-employed, full time parents, trades people, administrators or shopkeepers with a common interest to support and keep their community safe.

You will be providing a part time service, responding to fire and emergency calls in the same way as Wholetime Firefighters. Incidents can range from attending fires, floods, road traffic accidents, chemical spills, and talking to your community about fire prevention.

Firefighters may be called out a couple of times a week for may be one or two hours during the day, evenings or weekend. You decide the hours when you are available - all we ask is for you to be flexible.

Many employers are not aware of the benefits and transferable skills the Service can offer in your workplace – for more information, click on ‘Working for Us’ at the top of this page and then ‘A career with DSFRS’.

There are no qualifications but you must be:

Aged 18 or over.
Able to respond from home/work within 5 minutes.
Physically fit able to pass a bleep test 8.8 level over 20m.
Medically fit with good eyesight and hearing (please see attached for eyesight standards).
Prepared for the commitment and discipline of being a Firefighter.

Preferably hold a full UK driving licence.
