Fire Cadets
Our Fire Cadet Unit gives young people aged between 11 and 17 the opportunity to work with the fire and rescue service equipment and learn to work together as a team. You may wish to view our Fire Cadets Policy.

The scheme is aimed at young people, in school years 8 to 11, who would like to develop practical, life and communication skills. It also encourages young people to be part of a team. We aim to encourage the cadets to make the most of their physical and mental capabilities and to become safer, more responsible and caring members of the community.

The schemes objectives are to support the cadets to:

- keep themselves and other safe
- stay as healthy as possible
- make the most of their own and others' abilities
- develop independence and responsibility
- have worthwhile and fulfilling relationships
- respect the diversity in people and in the environment
- play an active role as members of a democratic society

The cadets carry out activities that are based on the job of a firefighter:

- using fire hoses
- climbing ladders
- operating fire pumps
- first aid
- dealing with mock emergencies

Each cadet is issued with a uniform and training key that they will be expected to maintain. The cadets code of conduct is based upon the high standard of self-discipline expected of the modern fire and rescue service.

How to become a Fire Cadet
