Press Release - Service celebrates International Women’s Day
Posted on 08/03/2018

The Service held a number of events to celebrate International Women’s Day on Thursday 8 March.

Women’s vital contribution to the emergency services was highlighted through the global #PressforProgress campaign.

South Devon Group Support Team hosted aspiring future firefighters Lily (aged nine) and Heidi (six) who visited Newton Abbot Fire Station to talk to some newly-recruited female firefighters about what it’s like being a firefighter.

The Service is encouraging girls as well as boys to be firefighters and remind women that we have vacancies at many of our on-call stations.

The training towers and vehicles at Bovey Tracey and Newton Abbot Stations were adorned with the international women’s day brand colours.

Firefighters were also present in Newton Abbot near the Clock Tower to talk to people about which women, past or present have inspired them and to give their views on why we struggle to recruit female firefighters. The person with the best replies will be invited to visit a station of their choice.
An all-female crew with a new fire appliance attended an event organised by Plymouth City Bus on the Hoe to showcase the role of women in transport. And a number of events for staff will be held at the Service Headquarters in Exeter.

In East Somerset, firefighters celebrated the on-going partnership with the Yeovil Ladies Football Club.
