Incident - Van fire

Date: 21/03/2019
Time: 12:50
Location: A30 East bound Merrymeat to Woodleigh
Area: Central
County: Devon

Fire crews from Chagford and Okehampton were mobilised to reports of a van fire at above location on the A30 carriageway.

Upon arrival the van was found to be well alight and crews set about extinguishing the fire using compressed air foam via a hosereel jet and 2 breathing apparatus.

When the fire was extinguished the problem then faced by the crews was the cargo the van was carring. This was 50 litres of a glue like bonding substance and it had now seeped onto the carriageway. Crews then requested the assistance of the specialist Environmental protection unit (EPU) from the fire station at North Tawton, to assist and enable a safe clean up operation. Highways agency was also requested to attend to assist in clean up operations.

Clean up operations are ongoing and newsdesk will be updated when further information becomes available.
