The Fatal Four

There are four main causes of road traffic collisions, these are known as the ‘Fatal Four’:

• Driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol
• Driving while using a mobile device
• Not wearing a seatbelt
• Speeding

In the UK in 2015 there were 23,689 people killed or seriously injured in road traffic collisions. 661 of these road traffic collisions took place in Devon and Somerset. Most of those deaths and serious injuries were caused by one or several of the ‘Fatal Four’ causes and could have been avoided. Not only does a road traffic collision risk the life of the driver and passengers, but it also risks the lives of other road users. In addition, the financial cost to society of a fatal collision is typically in the region of £2m and involves ambulance, fire, and police services resources.
