Incident - Fire In Vacant Public House

Date: 20/07/2019
Time: 01:24
Location: Phoenix Street, Plymouth
Area: Western
County: Devon

3 fire appliances from Greenbank and Camels Head, together with an aerial ladder platform from Crownhill, were initially mobilised to multiple calls to smoke issuing from a disused public house at the above location.

Within minutes of arriving on scene the first crews located the fire to the rear of the building and set to work firefighting. However, at 01:49hrs the attendance was increased by a further 2 fire appliances, mobilised from Plymstock and Plympton, together with a command support unit from Totnes, welfare pod from Ivybridge and incident support vehicle from Bovey Tracey, after crews confirmed the fire had spread to the basement of the building. At this time crews were using 6 breathing apparatus, 2 main jets and 2 hose reel jets.

Crews made good and steady progress but the attendance was further increased at 02:21hrs to assist with firefighting. These crews attended from Crownhill, Tavistock, Bere Alston, and Saltash and Callington (Cornwall Fire and Rescue).

Update 08:30hrs - This incident is now complete and was brought under control at 04:21hrs. The fire, which started accidentally, involved wooden flooring and joists between the ground floor and basement, of the 2 storey public house. The flooring involved was severely damaged by fire, with the remainder of the building sustaining severe fire, heat and smoke damage. In total crews used 8 breathing apparatus, 2 main jets, 3 main jets and 2 safety jets. Crews continuously cut away areas effected, damped down and checked for hotspots using a thermal image camera until they were satisfied that the fire was completely out. There were concerns during the initial phases of the incident that persons may have been in the building but after a methodical and thorough search this was later confirmed as no persons involved or reported. A revisit has been carried out to check for hotspots and fire investigation will be carried out later this morning but these are the full and final details.
