Incident - Recycling Centre Fire

Fire engines from Greenbank, Crownhill and Plymstock attended initial reports of a fire within a recycling centre in Plymouth. The Environmental Protection Unit from Newton Abbot was also required to attend along with the Water Carrier from Plympton.

Crews found a fire involving electrical recycling waste stored within a building at the recycling centre. Crews were using Breathing Apparatus and Foam to try to extinguish the fire.  The telehandler was requested to attend to assist with the removal of waste.

At 1330 a request for more fire engines was made for additional manpower. Representatives from Environmental Health Agency and Plymouth City Council were also in attendance.

10 Fire Engines are now in attendance at the incident attempting to extinguish the fire using foam and are attempting to drag the molten plastic apart to get access to the fire.

At 14:36 the incident commander confirmed a building measuring thirty metres by fifty metres used for waste recycling stock of electrical waste on fire. Crews at work with four breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets and one safety jet. Environmental health from Plymouth City Council in attendance.

At 15:08 a pile of molten plastic and cabling melted together with fire inside still burning. Breathing apparatus crews at work dragging apart the pile to access the fire.

At 21:44 hundred percent of the stock has been severely damaged by the fire. In total four breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets, two compressed air foam jets, one safety jet, one attack jet, two thermal imaging cameras, one short extension ladder, two gas detectors, one light portable pump and one dam was used at the incident. Plymouth City Council telehandler assisating on scene for firefighting purposes.
