Incident - Cars On Fire At Scrapyard - Update

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received 30 calls from members of the public reporting a car fire at Milber Trading Estate, Newton Abbot.

2 fire appliances from Torquay and Newton Abbot were immediately mobilised by Fire Control.

However, on arrival the officer in charge confirmed there were in fact 6 cars well alight at the scrapyard and requested a further fire appliance attend, which also came from Newton Abbot. At 07:06hrs this attendance was again increased by 2 fire appliances, which were mobilised from Torquay and Paignton, together with a Command Support Unit from Totnes.

Crews are currently at work with BA, attack jets and ground monitors to bring the fire under control.  

This incident is currently ongoing and will be updated in due course.  

Update 10:45hrs - This incident is now under control and has been scaled down. At the height of the fire this incident involved baled and crushed cars, with crews using 4 BA, 2 attack jets and a ground monitor, as well as utilising the sites mechanical grabber to minimise the height of the stack. The Police also issued a community message to warn local residents of the smoke and its associated hazards.

Fire investigation are now on scene to try and establish the cause. The fire has now been surrounded but crews are using limited firefighting (2 hose reel jets and 2 BA) whilst the situation is assessed. 2 fire appliances from Torquay and Paignton are currently in attendance.

Update 12:45hrs - Fire Investigation has now been carried out and the cause has been confirmed as accidental. The fire involved 30 baled and stacked crushed cars within the scrapyard. Crews are remaining on scene at this time.
