Time: 02:47
Location: Compton, Gropers Lane, Compton nr Marldon, Devon.
Area: Western

Fire Control received a call to reports of a building on fire at the above location.

1 fire appliance and a water bowser from Torquay, 2 fire appliances from Newton Abbot and an Operational Assurance Officer were mobilised to the location.

On arrival, crews confirmed this to be a fire involving a barn, measuring approx. 40m by 25m, well alight.

The barn contained a large amount of straw and farm machinery.

Crews got to work with 1 main jet and 2 breathing apparatus wearers.

A number of large bags of fertiliser were also within the barn.  With the help of the farmer, these were removed safely using a forklift. A combine harvester was also removed to a place of safety.

The barn contains approx. 200 tonnes of straw, which is involved in fire.  The fire is being allowed to burn under controlled conditions.

UPDATE 12:08

The fire is under control. This involved a building compartmentalised into four barns. Two barns are completely destroyed by the fire and the remaining two barns are affected by structural stability.

The affected barns contained one hundred and fifty tonnes of hay and straw which was completely destroyed by fire. The fire has also affected a large amount of animal feed, nine tonnes of fertiliser and some farm machinery.

The fire service will make periodic revisits to ensure that the fire is left to burn under control.
