Incident - Barn Fire

Two fire appliances from Paignton were initially sent to reports of an agricultural building on fire.  On arrival crews confirmed the building to be well alight and requested a further 2 fire appliances from Torquay and Brixham plus a water bowser from Torquay.  An incident command unit and support vehicle from Totnes were also sent.  At 12:38 a further 2 fire appliances were requested for extra personnel. These were sent from Buckfastleigh and Newton Abbot.

This fire involves a commercial barn of approximately 15m by 20m, containing a tractor, machinery and a quantity of cylinders. Crews set to work with one ground monitor, two attack jets, two breathing apparatus wearers working from two sectors. Efforts are being made to protect adjacent buildings to the fire. Crews have confirmed this building does contain asbestos.

At 17.05 The commercial barn, a tractor and other farm machinery contained within the structure have been severely damaged by fire. The barn also contained 20 gallons of oil and several cylinders including acetylene.  A 200 metre exclusion zone and road closures have been put in place and the farm and six other households have been evacuated.  The fire has been extinguished but fire crews continue to cool the cylinder using ground monitors. Fire crews will be in place overnight. The cordon remains in place but will be reduced when it is safe to do so.

At 20:15 Steady progress still being made, ground monitors being used to cool cylinder and to dampen down hotspots.  

At 05:00 3rd July one fire appliance remains at this incident maintaining a watching brief and damping down hotspots.
