Fire Control received several calls reporting a barn fire in Castle Cary. Fire appliances from Castle Cary, Wincanton and Shepton Mallet were mobilised to attend along with the Water Carrier from Yeovil.

On arrival crews confirmed one barn of concrete construction well alight with 100 bales of straw inside. Fire crews requested the telehandler from Exeter to attend to assist with the removal of bales. Crews are using 1 main jet to protect surrounding trees and hedgerow.

The Environment Agency and Local Authority Environmental Health Officer have been informed. A Welfare Unit from Burnham on Sea has been mobilised to provide refreshments for Fire Service Personnel.

One barn measuring 30m x 15m was completely destroyed by fire along with the 150 bales of hay contained within the barn.

Fire crews used four main jets and two light portable pumps to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire is believed to be deliberate.
