Incident - Barn Fire

Date: 10/03/2014
Time: 01:51
Location: Gerbestone Lane, Blackmoor, West Buckland
Area: Somerset
County: Somerset

Two appliances from Wellington and the water bowser from Bridgwater were mobilised to a report of a farm building on fire just off Junction 26 behind the Highways Agency Depot.  The fire was seen by a lorry driver on the motorway.

On arrival the crews confirmed that it was a small barn on fire which was adjacent to a stable block with horses inside.  There were also gas cylinders in the stable block.

The owner of the horses arrived to remove them to safety.  A ground monitor was set up and the crews retreated as the gas cylinders became involved in the fire.  A second ground monitor was then set up to assist with cooling the 2 propane cylinders.  A minimum of crew remained in the risk area and the remainder retreated to a distance of 150 - 200m.

After 1 cylinder had completely vented off and the other was removed and put into a temporary dam, the crews began removing approximately 1 tonne of hay and straw using drag forks and 2 hose reel jets.

The single storey building measuring 15m x 10m which was of wooden construction, was totally destroyed by fire.

Fire investigation will continue this morning with a Police CSI team.
