Fire Control received several calls reporting a barn fire near Castle Cary. Appliances from Castle Cary, Wincanton and Shepton Mallet were immediately mobilised to attend along with a Water Carrier from Bridgwater.

Initial reports stated the barn to be well alight. The barn measuring approx 40m x 20m containing 100 tonnes of hay has a roof believed to be of asbestos construction this is not involved in the fire. The Environment Agency have been informed. Further manpower was requested from Castle Cary.

23:32 2 Chicken houses right opposite the barn full of chickens. Crews at work with 4 Breathing Apparatus, 3 Hose Reel Jets, and 1 main jet.

23:34A request was made for an additional appliance from Shepton Mallet to attend along with the Incident Command Unit from Street. Police were also requested for traffic duties on the nearby A371.

23:47 1 Compressed Air Foam (CAFS) jet in use.

00:05 Crews are now working in two sectors. Sector 1 is the barn where 2 Breathing Apparatus, 1 CAFS jet, 2 hose reel jet are in use. Sector 2 is the chicken houses not involved in the fire but being cooled by crews using 2 Breathing Apparatus, 1 hose reel jet and 1 safety jet. The Incident Support Unit from Yeovil was also requested for Breathing Apparatus support and welfare. Additional CAFS stock was also requested.

00:42 Safety Officers are now in place and the barn is being allowed to burn under supervision of Fire Crews. Crews are continuing to carry out boundary cooling of the barn and chicken houses. Water is being sourced from a temporary dam supply.

The A371 has been closed by Police due to the proximity to this incident to the road.

01:14 This is now a watching brief. Crews at work with 3 hose reel jets and 1 main jet. The use of Breathing Apparatus has now been discontinued. The incident is being scaled down to 2 appliances, and further reliefs will be required at 0400.

04:48 One appliance from Martock and one from Yeovil were now in attendance. Crews were at work with 1 main jet damping down.

07:21 The farmer is now using a telehandler clearing out a small barn area. Crews are still using 1 main jet and a safety officer is in place.

09:51 Barn fire is now extinguished. 6 breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, one main jet, one compressed air foam jet were used. The A371 is due to be open by approximately 1130hours.
