The Vice Chair - George Wheeler

 

George was elected to Devon County Council for the Plymouth Sutton ward in 1989 when Plymouth was still a district council within Devon, was re-elected in 1993 and became Deputy Leader of the Labour Group until Plymouth became a unitary council independent of Devon County in 1998.

George was elected to Plymouth City council in 1995 to represent the Sutton ward until 2000 and chaired the council's transport committee amongst other committees. In 2002 he was elected to represent St Budeaux ward which he still represents. George has held various posts, including membership of the Cabinet, chairing scrutiny committees and membership of the planning committee and is currently joint Chair of the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry committee.

George has been a member of the Service Fire Authority for 3 years, serving on the Human Resources Management and Development (HRMD) committee and Audit and Performance Review Committee (APRC), chairing the latter for the last year.

As well as his involvement in politics, George worked within the computing industry and prior to retirement the last 20 years of his career were working at the University of Plymouth and Plymouth Polytechnic. George lives in St Budeaux, Plymouth.
