Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Control Rooms receive in excess of 28,000 emergency related calls each year.  Handling a variety of incidents including chimney, house, light industrial and moorland fires, road traffic collisions, hazardous material spillages and animal rescues.

The Fire Control Operator doesn’t just take 999 calls, he or she also needs to identify what a situation requires and work as part of a team to help save lives. This involves the ability to think clearly and calmly in extreme circumstances and requires exceptional interpersonal and telephone skills.

The Control room is operational throughout the year providing 24-hour cover. 

Full time Fire Control staff work a rotating shift pattern averaging 42 hours per week, consisting of 2 days (9 hours) and 2 nights (15 hours) followed by 4 rest days. Part time Fire Control staff work a minimum of 21 hours flexible up to 42 hours per week and do not necessarily follow the normal shift pattern as described above.

Both Full Time and Part Time Staff work shifts between the hours of 0900 to 1800 (day shift) and 1800 to 0900 (night shift).
 
What does the role involve?

• Working a shift system
• Effectively and efficiently handling emergency and administrative calls
• Obtaining clear and accurate incident details to enable mobilisation of appropriate resources in accordance with our policies
• Provide life saving advice to callers
• Maintain contact with resources, providing information on the incident as required
• Ensure adequate resources are available to maintain emergency cover
• Gather statistics for stakeholders

Salary

Trainee Control Operators start on £20,099 per year. After training you will be paid £26,790. If you’re ambitious and work hard there are opportunities for promotion to Crew and Watch Manager roles for those who demonstrate the necessary skills, knowledge and experience.
 
Eligibility

• Good keyboard skills (30 words per minute with 90% accuracy)
• Ability to receive and record information accurately
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to listen and speak clearly
• Be able to remain calm and provide guidance in stressful situations
• Must be able to work as part of a team
