Planning and Performance
The mission of Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is ‘Acting to Protect and Save’. To fulfil its mission the future direction and priorities of the Authority are presented in the Corporate Plan 2008/09 to 2010/11. This plan also incorporates the requirement to produce an Integrated Risk Management Plan. The planned activities and targets for this three year period are provided within the plan click here.
Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Authority has now completed its first year of delivering the combined service. The performance results during 2007/08 have been excellent. Chief Fire Officer, Paul Young said: “This first year has been an enormous challenge for all staff. We are the first service to go through the combination process and one year in, we have learnt a great deal. We set ourselves some demanding targets and I’m delighted that many have been achieved and in some cases exceeded. For that I want to recognise the hard work of all staff.”
The greatest success for the service is in the reduction of fires and false alarms. The service has seen a reduction of dwelling fires in the home by 10% (112 less fires) and the casualties at these types of fires have been reduced by 23% (39 people).
The service has seen a reduction across important areas that affect community safety:
· non-domestic fires down by 22% (180 fires),
· deliberate primary fires (excluding vehicles) down by 11% (58 fires),
· deliberate primary fires in vehicles down by 21% (136 fires),
· deliberate secondary fires (excluding vehicles), the most common type of arson, down by 19% (514 fires),
· deliberate secondary fires in vehicles has more than halved, down by 54% (33 fires),
· 12% (572) reduction in unwanted calls from fire alarm systems,
· 9% reduction in malicious calls received but not attended
· 19% reduction in malicious calls that have been attended.
