The British Red Cross fire and emergency support service, formerly fire victim support, helps to meet the needs of individuals who have suffered damage to their homes following a domestic property fire, flood or similar emergency.
We have two units operating in Devon and Somerset, based at the Plymouth Red Cross Centre and Bridgwater Fire Station, where dedicated volunteers provide 'on call' out of hours cover on weekday evenings from 1800 -0700 hours and 24 hour cover on weekends and Bank Holidays.
This service is available 365 days a year, responding to requests from the OIC of incidents across all parts of Somerset and sections of the northern and eastern divisions of Devon as well.
A typical call may occur in the early hours of the morning when normal sources of help are not so readily available and the individuals affected maybe left with only the clothes they stand up in.
Using a specially adapted and fully equipped motor home, volunteers assist individuals and families affected by providing and or arranging for practical help and support. Perhaps most importantly the service provides immediate temporary accommodation, where trained volunteers provide a calm listening ear amid the noise and clamour of the incident ground.
Other provisions include:
• Refreshments
• Clothing
• Toiletries
• Use of an onboard telephone
• First aid
• Sign posting to other organisations
• Support with the care of children and pets
• Assistance in securing temporary accommodation
• Transport to friends/family
• Use of shower/washing and toilet facilities
In addition, statutory authorities may also call upon the British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Service for non fire incidents, i.e. evacuations and to provide support to those affected by a major incident or emergency. This can involve providing assistance and support to humanitarian centres, amongst many other roles.
