Safe Working at Height and Confined Space (SHACS)

This discipline is sub-divided into three levels.

Level One

All crews will be trained and equipped to this standard which provides safe systems of work while carrying out operational duties.

Level Two
Selected fire stations are trained to the next level which enables firefighters when needed to be lowered down on tensioned rope systems to stabilise a situation, they are also trained to perform rescues if additional support or time critical situations dictate. These stations have been selected to provide a twenty minute ‘on scene’ response time to any incident within Devon and Somerset.

Level Three
Currently there are two areas within the organisation operating at this level, they are referred to as S.R.T (specialist rescue team) The first team was established fifteen years ago at Camels Head (Plymouth) and then in 2003 the second team in Ilfracombe.

These teams carry out full rope access work and rescues and act as support teams for SHACS level one and two crews.
