Fire Cadets

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service operates two fire cadet units, giving boys and girls aged 11 to 17 the opportunity to work with Fire and Rescue Service equipment and learn to work together as a team.

What is Fire Cadets?

Fire Cadets is a uniformed youth development scheme.

Who's it aimed at?

It is aimed at young people, in school years 8 to 11, who would like to develop practical skills, life skills and communication skills and be part of a team.  It will encourage them to make the most of their physical and mental capabilities and to become safer and more responsible and caring members of the community.


What are the Objectives?

The scheme’s objectives are to support the young people to:

- keep themselves and other safe
- stay as healthy as possible
- make the most of their own and others’ abilities
- develop independence and responsibility
- have worthwhile and fulfilling relationships
- respect the diversity in people and in the environment
- play an active role as members of a democratic society

What do Fire Cadets do?

The activities are based on the job of a firefighter:

- using fire hoses
- climbing ladders
- operating fire pumps
- first aid
- dealing with mock emergencies


Is a Uniform provided?

Fire Cadets are issued with a uniform and training kit that they are expected to maintain smartly and the code of conduct is based upon the high standard of self-discipline expected within the Fire Service.

How do I become a Fire Cadet?

Currently there are Fire Cadet Units at Taunton and Frome, and places are extremely limited.  Please contact the Children & Young People’s Team if you would like to apply on 01392 872289.  You may be asked to take part in a practical test or interview.
