Corps of Drums and Pipe Band

The Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Corps of Drums has been serving the people of Devon, and more recently Somerset, following the amalgamation of the two services, for over thirty years.

The second section is a marching band of approximately 20 members which plays as a separate Corps of Drums OR with the Pipe Band.

The Corps consists of approximately ten side drummers / buglers plus one bass and four tenor drummers. It is a group of men and women who have a love of military style drumming. Under the direction of Drum Major Ian Washburn BEM (ex Grenadier Guards) and Drum Major Dave Morley (ex Royal Marines) the Corps add style and panache to any formal occasion - be it a military style parade, carnival procession, mess beatings, wedding or bugle fanfare. We also perform with various concert and marching bands.

We attend the Annual Firefighters Memorial Service in St Paul’s London. The Corps has taken part in Military Tattoos and concerts across Europe and in front of royalty. The main event for the last 30 years has been leading a 60 strong combined band playing in Ypres, Belgium under the Menin Gate for the internationally attended Remembrance Day Parades in November.

As part of the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service ‘family’, the Corps of Drums is key in promoting and supporting the service at both formal and more relaxed events.

We are always on the lookout for new members and membership is open to anyone over the age of 16 years. The members of the Corps are not only serving firefighters, and support staff but also people from the wider community.

The Corps rehearse at the Fire Service HQ near Exeter usually one evening a week as well as one Sunday morning a month. Uniform, instruments, transport and practice venues are free as is accommodation when the band is away. You don’t have to have previous experience in playing the drum and bugle but it obviously helps. A lot of tuition can be sent via various video and audio links.

We regularly collaborate with the following Bands:

  • The Band of the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service
  • The Band of the West Midlands Fire Service
  • The Devonport Royal Naval Volunteer Band
  • North Devon Pipes and Drums
  • Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service Ceremonial Unit Pipe Band
  • City of Exeter Pipes & Drums.
